Cervical Cancer & HPV

What is HPV?

HPV stands for human papilloma virus and is implicated in causing, pre-cervical cancer, cervical cancer, other genital cancers such as vaginal and vulvar, penile and anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer and genital warts.

How Can I Protect Myself and My Family?

Currently there are three types of vaccinations for HPV.

- HPV strain 16 and 18 are implicated in up to 70% of cervical cancer
- Female Singaporeans and Singapore PRs between the ages of 9-26 years old can use their Medisave for either Cervarix or Gardasil vaccinations.

Do I still need to have Cervical Cancer Screening even if I have had the vaccination?

Yes. Women who are sexually active above the age of 25 years old should go for regular cervical cancer screening.

Whilst the vaccination is highly effective it does not cover 100% of all HPV strains.
Regular screening is still your best protection against cervical cancer.

1) If you are between 25-29 years old – PAP testing once every 3 years
2) If you are over 30 years old – HPV testing once every 5 years
